Council Meeting Memo #089 — Five for Friday
Salo Ra II: Viptronic (Sormi Editions, Album)
Who’s up for some Finnish Jazz Psych? Thought not, but you before you go elsewhere, this really has been touching me in appropriate places since I found it by accident. Despite the title suggesting that this is some mid 90’s jungle. This is actually four tracks of laser-guided experimentation, all drenched in diffused sun. Make some headspace for detuned guitar > overdriven noise > church bells. SA
Anthony Naples: Scanners (ANS, Album)
Five seconds of hearing the opening title track, I knew I was going to be alright. Five minutes later though, that internal grin was waning somewhat. After spacing out for a bit and hitting the twenty-five minute mark, I’d thought I’d stuck the wrong record on. What can I say? What will I say? It’s not bad but I just know that I won’t be returning to it again. SA
DeepChord Presents Echospace: Liumin (Modern Love, Album)
In some earlier recent review, I said that when it comes to summer, it’s all about drone or dub techno. Well as the heat kicked in here in North London, this album soundtracked the sun. Alright, so i’m late to this by about 15 years but such is the nature of this genre that it could have been released either last week or in the mid’90s. Just be like me and have ‘Summer Haze’, ‘Sub-Marine’ and ‘BCN Dub’ on a loop….loud. SA
Boxcutter: Dapple / Eyebeam (Kinnego, EP)
Boxcutter aka Barry Lynn, has been perfecting his unique brand of bass music meets dubstep meets whatever other genre is lying around at the time for nigh on twenty years now. Both cuts here skip gleefully, weightless and without abandon — seasonally on cue too. ‘Dapple’ narrowly edges out as the more appealing offering. And whilst I’m here, I can’t go by without me bigging up his debut album ‘Oneric’ for Planet µ — and its not because I did the artwork. SA
Secondo: Over Under (What About Never, Album)
Iridescent melodies, considered rhythm and satisfyingly sweeping synth pads; best demonstrated on the single ‘Unlikely-companions’. This is experimental house and techno done right. Only criticism is that some of the tracks stop too short. But then that could take away from the brisk 45 min run time. ‘Island-Drift’ was the one for me. Painfully ace artwork from Laurent Benner too. SA
